Diseases affecting the eyes are enormous and also are their treatment and management. The leading causes of blindness and low vision in our population are primarily age-related eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy and glaucoma. Many of these eye conditions go unnoticed till late stages where severe damage has already occurred leading to permanent vision loss.

Most people are unaware that some metabolic and systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, increased cholesterol levels amongst a number of diseases affect the eyes and could lead to preventable partial or permanent vision loss if not detected early as it can severely impact the quality of life among adult populations. Adults with vision impairment often have lower rates of workforce participation and productivity and higher rates of depression and anxiety. Hence the need for eye exam for this group.

Several pathologies also affect the infant and children population most of which are congenital eye diseases such as Amblyopia, congenital cataract, retinitis pigmentosa, ophthalmitis neonatorum, congenital glaucoma e.t.c. It is no news that this group needs urgent and delicate attention in managing such eye conditions to prevent permanent loss in vision.
